NICARAGUA: Ortega declares "state of national disaster"

In the wake of flooding caused by a month of intense rains and category-5 Hurricane Felix, which hit northeastern Nicaragua early September, the government declared a state of national disaster on 19 October. President Daniel Ortega said that the damage was "worse than Hurricane Mitch" referring to the effects of the hurricane which struck Nicaragua in October 1998, which killed over 3,000 people, left 700,000 families homeless and caused between US$1.5bn to US$2bn worth of damage.
